Junior squad's day at Wentworth
SOME of the brightest and best of Surrey's young golfers enjoyed a special treat at the BMW PGA Championships, at Wentworth on Saturday.
Members of the county's junior boys and girls squads were granted a coveted, exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the European Tour's flagship event.
Daisy Kenny, of Cuddington, Jesicca Sewell, of Wentwortth, Alice Evans of Roehampton, Hayley Waterer, of Farleigh Court, and Danielle Ferry, of Bramley, were joined by Liam Cox, of Burhill, Scott Bryan, of Wentworth, and Connor Chant, of Betchworth Park.
They were welcomed in the inner sanctum of the Tour's boardroom by European Tour official and former Surrey captain Ian Barker, before being given a guided tour around the Mizuno equipment truck, the physiotherapy bus and the media centre before watching the players on the practice range and out on the £6.5million remodelled West Course.
On a glorious cloudless day they witnessed golf as hot as the weather including a never to be forgotten course record nine under par 62 from Swedish Ryder Cup star Robert Karlsson, that took him from a share of 63rd place to joint second, two shots behind English leader Chris Wood.
Jessica Sewell summed up the reactions among the group declaring: "We've all had an amazing day. It's been a special treat to be given such a privileged insight into how such a major golfing event is run. I think we have learned a lot as well as having great fun."
