Every month we’ll try and explain some of the golfing terms you might hear and think “what on earth are they talking about?” If there’s a term you don’t understand, let us know and we’ll try and make sense of it

Shotgun Start
When there are lots of people playing in a competition, especially when there is tea or an event afterwards it’s best to get everyone starting at the same time. Shotgun means that everyone starts there round at the same time from different holes.

For example Team A may start on the 1st hole, whilst Team B start on the 2nd hole, and so on. Originally a shotgun was fired to tell everyone to start, these days hooters or bells are used, or you just start at a given time!.

Greensomes
This is a game played in pairs. Both players hit their own ball from the tee. They then decide which tee shot they prefer and play alternate shot from then on.

For example, Anna and Ben both hit their own ball from the tee. Anna's ball lands over to the right, whilst Ben's ball sits nicely in the fairway. Together they decide to play Ben's ball, so Anna hits the next shot. They then alternate until the ball is in the hole. It all starts again at the next hole.
